architectural cost control is an essential
aspect of the entire construction process, from the initiative through completion.
In the initiative phase a budget estimate will have to determine the feasibility
of a - preliminary - design or preliminary study. Often, the outcome thereof
will be indicative of the decision-making whether to develop a project into the next phase.
Whereas in the initiative phase prices are often calculated in m² or m³, in the
final design phase it will already be possible to prepare an elements estimate.
Following the completion of the specification and contract drawings, a management
estimate can be prepared in order to provide insight into the anticipated tender(s)
by contractors. A thorough examination of the tender price of a contractor may reveal
any inaccuracy in the cost price of the project and be of use in finding alternatives
and/or cutbacks in order to avoid a budget overrun.
Finally, in the construction phase, it is recommendable to check the estimates
of additions and omissions before awarding the contract.
